I'd Love to Glove MJ

…but I can’t.

I’ve gloved some people in my time: Rachida Dati, Michael Winnner, Grace Jones, John Sergeant. I’ve even gloved New Year’s Eve. (Not my best).

Black sells some lovely gloves. The Sunday Telegraph’s Stella loves our gloves. But when I see gloves like these I feel I’ve failed. Diamond-crusted gloves. What could be better? If we’re a glove retailer and we DON’T sell diamond-crusted gloves, what is our worth? What are we doing here? Who am I? Who are you?

I guess that’s the thing about MJ’s death. It may have created a pandemic of introspection – not necessarily sparked off by feelings of glove-range inadequacy – causing Man in The Mirror to head the iTunes Download chart.

I'd Love to Glove Rachida Dati

Cri de coeur.  British feminists are foaming at the spectacle of French Justice Minister, Rachida Dati, zooming out of a 5-day maternity leave. L’horreur, non? Quel mirage. Black velvet jacket, stilettoed feet, no eye-bags, no belly-bag. She’s so impeccably French: an excoriating sight for la femme ros-bif, who gets fat by just looking at lard (and probably eating it when all’s said and done) and whose life is audibly destroyed by the effects of childbirth – while Dati will slither in and out of halcyon Provençal lunches like a diaphanous anchois, dropping kids in the morning and holding forth in the Supreme Court by elevenses.

Dati’s rush back to work, it is said, might have more to do with the fact that Sarkozy is planning a reshuffle imminently and that her presence demonstrates her desire to keep her position. Therefore, with a new baby to care for and no active father in the dynamic, someone should give la superwomaaan a break – or equally allow her not to have one.

In my capacity as Secrétaire de Gants (sharing office with the Fashion Police and Style Council) I’d issue these to Mme Dati.
