Houndsooth is definitely one of this season’s most popular women’s wear trends. Nothing can escape its bite this autumn with jackets, skirts, clutches, flats and accessories all featuring the classic pattern.
However, we men don’t recognise the trend in the same way. It doesn’t oscillate in popularity according to fashion. It is our timeless pattern; like a hound, it’s a man’s best friend.
It creates a sharp and understated look that doesn’t command the same attention as a paisley or other more intricate patterns and can be worn day after day and year after year. For me, the appeal is in the geometry of the pattern and the subtle contrast offered by using colours of similar shades; the effect is noticeable but not obvious.
The texture it adds to outfits owes much to its heritage. The design, from Scotland in 1800s, was originally applied to woollen cloth worn by shepherds and the tradition has continued with tweed, wool and cashmere fabrics used widely in the design.
